Cuckoo behaviour (evolved or what else?)?

It is surprising how widespread this behaviour (brood parasitism) is. The Large Blue erfly even hoodwinks ants into rearing its young. The case of the cuckoo is a particularly interesting one because I think I'm right in saying that by the time the chicks are ready to fly the adults have already left for Africa - so who shows the chicks where to go?
