Is the musical sweeney todd as violent as the movie?

Sweeney Todd (the musical) is coming to our town, and i really want to see it, but first i have to make sure it isn't too violent. I have never seen the movie, but from what i hear, it is really bloody and dark. Is the musical as violent as the movie, and is it appropriate for a 13 year old?
